Asteroids Tyche and Fortuna

Unlike Athena who was born fully-formed from Zeus’ head or Dionysus who emerged from Zeus’ thigh, the Goddess Tyche evolved in Ancient Greece around the 4th Century BC from the idea that good fortune could be propitiated and courted. This idea was then personified as the Goddess Tyche/Fortuna.

In those days, Tyche was never invoked on her own because the Greeks (and others) understood that Tyche has a synchronistic relationship with other deities.  This makes sense if you have even the most basic understanding of how luck manifests in the material world. Something unforeseen or substantially beyond the domain of your control has to occur for you to be a recipient of luck. 

Tyche is unable to bestow favors without the cooperation of other deities and divine forces. She may look like she stands alone but is in fact the symbol of cooperation.

I can tell you that in my own practice, I do not invoke her without first calling Gaia and then the Agathos Daimon.  This means I acknowledge the Great Mother and then the Good Spirit that ensures health and good fortune in the home.

Luck is both self-generated and random. You are capable of generating lucky experiences but you are also dependent on forces beyond your control.

In astrology, the asteroids Tyche (258) and Fortuna (19) reveal areas in which you experience good luck.  As a symbol of cooperation, Tyche is in cahoots so to speak with the planetary ruler of the sign she finds herself in. In Cancer she cooperates with the Moon to bring luck and fortune. In Sagittarius she cooperates with Jupiter. You will want to look at the planetary ruler’s placement in your birth chart for a fuller picture of how you both generate luck but also experience “lucky breaks”.

Case study #1. Margot Robbie.

You can see from her birth chart that Margot has Tyche at 26º Cancer in the 1st House and Fortuna at 22º Taurus in the 11th House. 

Tyche answers to the Moon in Margot’s 5H (5th house). She’s lucky when she utilizes her imagination and expresses her creativity.

Tyche in Cancer tells us that Margot is lucky when it comes to home, real estate and her connection with her mother.  Margot is very close to her mother Sarie Kessler, and owns at least two homes. Cancer is her 1H (1st House) which tells us that she generates luck by going after her dreams and being the boss. She owns her own production company called  - wait for it - LuckyChap Entertainment. Her production company is behind “Barbie” and raked in over $1 billion dollars in two weeks. 

Unsurprisingly, Barbie was launched to worldwide acclaim when transiting Sun conjoined Margot’s Tyche. 

Her Fortuna at 22º Taurus in the 11H tells us that she benefits from her friendships and network of connections. 

Case study #2. Madonna

Madonna has Tyche and Fortuna conjunct in Scorpio in the 3rd House.

She has achieved fame and fortune by “expressing herself” (3H) and breaking sexual and religious taboos (Scorpio). Both Tyche and Fortuna answer to Mars in Taurus. Taurus is a sign of the bull and is associated with tenacity, material success, sensuality and strength. Madonna is an inspiring example of resiliency and strength.

Here is how to locate Tyche and Fortuna in your chart.

• Visit www.astro.com.

• Click on FREE HOROSCOPES, then click on CHARTS & DATA.

• Select chart drawing.

• Fill in your details and make sure you select WHOLE HOUSE under HOUSE system.
