Welcome to Aquarius Season

The Sun is now in Aquarius, a fixed sign, and what was begun or ideated in cardinal Capricorn now becomes a central theme. The image associated with Aquarius offers clues on how you are encouraged to proceed this month. The constellation of this segment of the ecliptic is a human figure with a container in his hands that he holds at an angle out of which water pours. In myth, the constellation of Aquarius is Ganymede, the handsome Trojan prince who was carried off by Zeus to be his cup bearer. The water bearer holds in his earthen vessel an abundance of experiences and insights and is in the process of passing this knowledge on.

Although we say water pours out of this container, Aquarius is in fact an air sign and of course if you look up at the constellation what you see is a stream of stars. These stars represent a stream of intellectual content but I want to go deeper than this. The card associated with Aquarius in the tarot is The Star. A card of hope.

In Meditations on the Tarot, Unknown describes the woman in the card as “the mother of the future” and “her message confronts us with the duty towards the future.”

The contents that require your attention are those that exceed the personal and the present because ideas that only delight the self or your immediate circle of family and friends belong to Leo, the sign opposite Aquarius. Your ideas - ideally - must serve the collective in the coming weeks, months and/or years.

I always think of the concept of connectional intelligence during Aquarius Season. Connectional intelligence* can be summed up as creating connections that will enrich our collective potential.

Our differences move from foreground to background when we focus on what we have in common: unrelenting optimism about the potential of everyday people to get big things done.” - Erica Dhawan & Saj-Nicole Joni, Get Big Things Done.

Nelson Mandela practiced connectional intelligence when he advocated for prisoners while in prison on Robben Island. Black prisoners were only allowed to wear sandals and shorts even in winter and in 1966, Mandela secured the rights for prisoners like himself to wear long pants. His efforts eventually led to more benefits that included prisoners being allowed to read and write in their cells and growing their own vegetables.

The energy behind this concept is very Uranian (Mandela’s natal Uranus is in Aquarius). Uranus is one of Aquarius’ ruler. If an idea truly electrifies you, it can potentially inspire others and bring about positive change in the future.

Mercury and Mars are direct but both are sluggish - a sign that we must not push ahead before we are really and truly ready - and Uranus stations direct on Sunday.  Our “containers” are full with learnings and insights and ideas but we are still in the process of raising these to consciousness. Again, this process cannot be rushed. Concepts, learnings etc are marinating.  Saturn, Aquarius’ other planetary ruler, tempers Uranus’ impulsivity. Saturn asks for patience and careful planning.

It may be worth your while to wait for the 29th (Jan) when Uranus is plugged in and trine Mercury for a brilliant insight or AHA! Moment.

For next steps write out the answers to these questions:

  • Who else shares my vision? Who has similar ideas and how can we join forces?

  • How can my learned wisdom benefit others?

  • How am I symbol of hope?

  • What does my duty to the future look like?
