Some news…
My article, Mars, The Life Coach is featured in The Astrological Journal (May/June issue). I wrote this article because over the years I have noticed that many astrologers tend to favor the cycles of the social and outer planets when counselling clients, and ignore Mars, the planetary life coach.
As Mars is the principle of action, and the planet that helps Sol express himself, there is no disputing the fact that if we hope to develop skills, enhance our career prospects and advance in life, we have to pay very close attention to Mars.
Here is an excerpt of my article:
Mars is the principle of action, the force, to quote Erin Sullivan that “gets us out of bed” and as such is the cosmic coach that guides our personal development as he orbits our personal Sun.
To understand how Mars does this, start out by familiarizing yourself with your natal Mars. The sign in which you find Mars describes his primary motivation. If you wish to succeed at anything, your goals must align with this primary motivation.
For example, Mars in Leo seeks to express the Sun’s desire for a stage. This often translates into a role that finds you on a stage as a speaker, actor, teacher or presenter.
Next get to know how you respond to external and internal stimuli. If for example, your natal Mars is in Pisces, you are someone who needs more time for rest and reflection than say someone with an Aries Mars. Life coach Mars would ask you to schedule regular breaks.
The Week Ahead
There are three main events this week.
Venus enters Taurus, Mars enters Aries and Pluto stations retrograde.
**All times are PACIFIC TIME
**Note on VOID OF COURSE Moon (VOC) periods**
The VOC period begins when the Moon makes the last major aspect to another planet while in the Zodiac sign it is currently in and ends when the transit Moon enters the next sign.
Void moons are good for quiet solo work. Focus on planning, organizing and tying up loose ends. Don’t launch anything. If you want eyeballs on your work you will avoid sharing during a Void Moon. Don’t sign contracts, don’t hold meetings and don’t make big purchases. If you want to be remembered you will also schedule auditions, interviews and dates for times when the Moon is not void-of-course.
TIP: Mark these VOC periods down in your daily planner and/or highlight these hours in your digital calendar. There are three main events this week:
Monday 29 April
Venus in Taurus 4:31am
I heard someone use the word ravishing the other day to describe a sunset and I thought, I need to use this word more. And then I thought of the Goddess Aphrodite and how if I were to describe her I would say “radiant and ravishing”...
Then I went down a rabbit hole. The word ravishing comes from the Old French word raviss which means “to seize, to plunder, to rape” and also very hungry.
After this, I discovered Sigmund Freud had four planets in Taurus which explains his obsession with sex and goes some way in confirming my belief that Taurus is in fact hornier than Scorpio.
So I’ve been thinking a lot about hunger and sex and how this describes Venus in Taurus.
Aphrodite is the urge to merge for pleasure and procreation.
She was not worshiped as the Goddess of Romantic Love by the Greeks because the notion of romantic love is a relatively modern concept. People did not unite in marriage in Hellenistic times because they believed they were “twin souls”.
The most women could hope for was friendship which would evolve with time into deep and abiding love.
Read about Aphrodite in ancient texts and you will notice she was floral. She was often depicted surrounded by flowers or wearing flowers and in verse, she was compared to flowers because flowers are sex organs. Venus in Taurus is the instinctual response to attraction.
Which leads me back to hunger.
Venus in Taurus has an appetite - for beauty, pleasure, food, sex…Look to your Taurus house to see what you hunger for. If Taurus is your 4th House you may hunger for new furniture or a kitchen remodel. If Taurus is your 3H you may be lusting after a new car - classic, elegant like the vintage baby blue Chevrolet Corvette that Sugar drives in the television series.
What are you hungry for?
Tuesday 30 April
VOC 8:18am- 8:19am (A ONE MINUTE VOID MOON!!)
Moon enters Aquarius
Mars in Aries 8:32 am
Mars is at home in Aries so he is powerful in the sign of the Ram. However while Mars is associated with speed and “heating things up”, he - like everyone else - is slowed down by Saturn. So while you may think that Mars’ move into Aries is going to speed up your Aries house matters that is not the case if your natal Saturn is in Capricorn and Cancer. Whenever Mars is in Aries you can expect a slow month or a month in which you encounter delays. If you do not have natal Saturn in Capricorn or Cancer rejoice as your Aries house will indeed light up.
Mars in Aries is associated with the warrior which brings up images of a samurai swinging his sword or a soldier running towards the enemy line. However, Mars in Aries has a warrior’s attitude. Mars here understands that when it comes to matters of success or failure your attitude is more important than your capabilities.
Aries rules the head and that is the part of your body you are called to use at this time. You will notice I am not saying “mind” which is something other than your body and belongs to Mercury, the Trickster. Use your body. Stand with confidence. Bare your teeth.
Then go after what your heart wants.
Consider your Taurus and Aries houses. Since Aries is the sign before Taurus it may very well be that the thing that the Sun in Taurus wants you to express or experience is dependent on a skill that has to be honed and sharpened by fiery Mars.
Wednesday 1 May
Third Quarter Moon at 11º Aquarius 4:27am
Aquarius is an Air sign that is hot and moist. I am reminded of tropical rainforest canopies populated by gold-and-blue macaws, hummingbirds, spanish moss and delicate orchids. When the Moon is in Aquarius it is a good idea to do something out-of-the-ordinary and to seek connection and friendship. Bring out your eccentric style today. The wonderful Iris Apfel comes to mind. Mercury is conjunct Chiron today which may bring up issues around confidence but I think Mars’ entry into Aries will remind you that you don’t need anyone’s approval or permission to be who you choose to be.
Thursday 2 May
VOC 2:28am - 11:51am
Moon enters Pisces
Pluto stations retrograde 10:46am
Pluto stations retrograde on May 2nd at 2º Aquarius. If you have any personal planets or an angle (like your Ascendant) between 0º-2ºAquarius or Leo, Taurus and Scorpio you are going to feel this shift in direction.
Erin Sullivan in her book Retrograde Planets links Pluto with the word “never”...
I will never get over X
I will never do this or that thing…
I mention this because the word “never” has shown up a lot in conversations this past week. Pluto is the transformation of one thing to another and as I have said before, the planet of true magick. You say “never” and Pluto laughs.
Pluto reveals complexes.
I’m not a therapist but the way I choose to describe a complex is that a complex is a treasured image we hold of ourselves that we continue to feed and enrich every time we choose to re-enact it.
“It is the image of a certain psychic situation which is strongly accentuated emotionally and is, moreover, incompatible with the habitual attitude of consciousness. This image has a powerful inner coherence. It has its own wholeness, and, in addition, a relatively high degree of autonomy, so that it is subject to the control of the conscious mind to only a limited extent, and therefore behaves like an animated foreign body in the sphere of consciousness. The complex can usually be suppressed with an effort of will but not argued out of existence, and at the first suitable opportunity it reappears in all its original strength.” (Jung, CG, Collected Works Volume 8, p.96.)
The word “never” triggers Pluto because never implies permanence and there is no such thing. Everything is in flux. Use this word and you unconsciously invoke Pluto.
Pluto will be retrograde until 11 October, 2024. During this period expect a shedding of skin, a psychological transformation, a catharsis.
Friday 3 May
Mars sextile Pluto 2:05 am
This is an excellent aspect for rallying people or organizing a group event. For the magickal practitioner/witch this is a powerful aspect that will help you manifest change with little resistance. Since the Moon is waning, you will want to focus on the release of psychological baggage that continues to prevent you from claiming and recognizing your creative power.
Saturday 4 May
VOC 12:06pm - 1:40pm
Moon enters Aries 1:40pm
Moon conjunct Mars, Moon sextile Pluto
Emotions align with actions. Nothing stands in your way today.
