I spotted an American goldfinch. They remind me of the canaries my grandmother kept in an ornate cage in the veranda of our home in Africa. And indeed, they are often referred to as “wild canaries”. Goldfinches are belated breeders. While other birds are tending to second or third broods, they’re only now courting and building nests.
